Title: In the Rockies

Date: 1884

Creator: John Colin Forbes

Additional Creator Information: Canadian (1846-1925)

Medium: oil on canvas

Best known as a portraitist, Forbes is known to have done mountain paintings from photographs as early as 1884. In 1886, Forbes sketching companion in the mountains was Lucius O'Brien. This puzzling work, acquired by the Glenbow Museum in 1984, bears the date of 1884, although the existence of a Lucius O'Brien watercolour from 1886 (Mountain Pastures, British Columbia, Collection University of Lethbridge) ostensibly of the same mountain scarred by a rockslide, suggests that the Glenbow oil by Forbes may be of a later date. Forbes did, in fact, exhibit a small oil under the title of Rock Slide at Glacier Mountain at the Royal Canadian Academy exhibition held in Montreal in April of 1887.
