Title: Fred Pope.

Date: [ca. 1865-1866]

Remarks: Born in Cookshire, Quebec of English parents; Joined army in 1863 and served with Quebec Rifles; in 1865 transferred to 14th battalion, Cornwall. Servied under Colonel Wolseley in Fenian Raid, 1866. In 1870 was on the Red River expedition to quell Louis Riel. In 1873, while in the Militia was transferred to the North West Mounted Police. Stationed at Fort Macleod from 1874 to 1882, when he resigned to ranch. After working as a surveyor and in the Galt Coal mine at Lethbridge, he homesteaded at Mill Creek.

Title: Protection provided to Sitting Bull in Canada.

Date: September 22, 1877

Remarks: Sketch by Henri Julien. This political cartoon was published in Canadian Illustrated News soon after Sitting Bull and his Lakota and Cheyenne warriors defeated American Lieutenant-Colonel Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Sitting Bull escaped into the Canadian territories. Copied from PA-386-21.
