Title: Archibald W. McVittie, surveyor.

Date: [ca. 1920]

Remarks: Aged sixty years.
Mr. McVittie qualified for his Dominion Land Surveyor commission in 1882 after which he surveyed township outlines. In 1883 he worked at Fort Macleod and in 1884 he surveyed the town plot east of the Elbow River at Calgary, Alberta.

Title: Log house on St. George's Island, Calgary, Alberta.

Date: [ca. 1940s]

Remarks: Constructed for surveyor Archibald W. McVittie on the west side of the Elbow River on 12th Avenue SE in 1882. It was later moved to the Calgary Zoo and named "Calgary's First House." In 1965, James B. Cross donated the house to Heritage Park Historical Village in memory of his father, A.E. Cross. In Heritage Park, it is interpreted as the Wolffe & McVittie Cabin.
