Started watch repair shop in 1904 which expanded to D.E. Black and company in 1913 and employed sixty-two people. Incorporated with Henry Birks and sons in 1920; was retained as general manager and later became president. Served as city alderman in 1923-1924; later on board of directors for Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.
