Remarks: Imperial Oil, Richfield, Cities Service and Royalite are conducting studies to determine the commercial feasibility of extracting hydrocarbons from the Athabasca oil sands. The plant has been in operation since August 1959 and includes specially constructed mining machinery and conventional refining equipment capable of processing 3,000 barrels per day of a bitumen diluent mixture. After being settled in the pond show in the foreground, water from the Athabasca River is treated for human consumption and for process and cooling water. The oil sand escarpment rises behind the plant area.

The mining equipment removes oil sands from the escarpment and conveys it to a mobile extraction unit. It returns clean sands to the excarpment area and forwards the liquid hydrocarbons on to the refinery.

The two units are located at the base of the oil sand excarpment. The mining equipment removes oil sands from the escarpment and conveys it to a mobile extraction unit. It returns clean sand to the excarpment area and forwards the liquid hydrocarbons on to the refinery.
