Title: Paul and Jessie Brecken fonds

Physical Description: 25 cm of textual records. -- 185 photographs
History: Paul Ralph Brecken, 1886-1960, was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1909. In 1910 he married Jessie Copeland, 1886-1976, who was originally from Winnipeg, and had been educated at Havergal Ladies' College in Toronto. They moved to Calgary before the First World War, where Paul was general secretary of the YMCA. He served with the YMCA overseas during First World War, during which time Jessie stayed with her family in Toronto. On his return he attended Normal School in Edmonton, then taught at Crescent Heights High School, Calgary from 1921 to 1951. He sat as a Conservative in the Alberta Legislature, 1952-1955, and was a city alderman for 13 years.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of letters from Jessie to Paul while he served overseas (1917-1919); Jessie's Havergal College notebooks (1902-1903); photographs of the Brecken family; and various certificates, war service records and diplomas.
