Norman Flaxman Priestley, 1884-1958, was born in Yorkshire, England. He came to Canada in 1904 and homesteaded at Onoway, Alberta. He married Gertrude L. Crowther, 1884-1965, also from Yorkshire, in 1912 and they had five children: Mona (Thornton), 1913-2004, Betty (Meyers), Dora Mildred (Banister), 1920-1989, Pattie (Harding), and Arthur J. He served with the 202nd Battalion during the First World War. He studied theology at the University of Alberta, and held pastorates (Methodist and later United Church) at Wainwright, 1918-1922, and Coaldale, 1922-1929. He was very active in the farm movement and advancement of the principles of cooperation. He was president of the Lethbridge United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) Federal Constituency Association in the late 1920s. From 1929 to 1931 he was secretary of the Alberta Institute of Cooperation, and wrote a textbook on cooperation for use in Alberta schools of agriculture. He was elected vice-president of the UFA in 1931, and moved to Calgary the same year. He was first national secretary of the CCF, formed in 1932. From 1940 to 1951 he was manager of the UFA Coop. He then served as secretary of the Alberta Cooperative Union until his retirement in 1956. His history of the Alberta farm movement was completed after his death by E.B. Swindlehurst, Furrows, Faith and Fellowship. - Edmonton : Alberta Agricultural Centennial Committee, 1967.
Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of correspondence, speeches, radio broadcasts, and articles regarding agricultural and political topics; records of organizations in which he was involved, especially UFA and Alberta Institute of Cooperation; outline and manuscript of textbook on cooperation; and newsclippings about his interests and career (1922-1944).
