Noel Adair Farrow, 1892-1972, was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He received his diploma from the Ohio Institute of Pharmacy, USA, before moving to Alberta in 1912. He worked for druggists in Fernie, British Columbia and Innisfail and Calgary, Alberta, then served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during First World War. He remained an active member of the Calgary Highlanders (10th Battalion) veterans organization. He completed his pharmacy degree at the University of Alberta School of Pharmacy in 1920. From 1920 to 1925 he was pharmacist at the City of Calgary Hospitals Department. He opened his own store, Farrow's Drug Store, in Calgary in 1925, and later opened branches in Longview and Royalties. In 1932 he married Alice Mary Cartier and they had one son, Robert. Noel was president of the Calgary and District Retail Druggists Association in 1935; of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association, 1944-1946; and of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association in 1950. He ran the Calgary pharmacy until 1970.
Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of personal papers: First World War letters home and service records, School of Pharmacy notes and exams, personal correspondence (1919-1970), veterans' association papers, newsclippings, scrapbook, and miscellaneous certificates, memberships and invitations; drugstore records (1921-1970): Farrow's Drug Store correspondence, advertising circulars, employee records, stock inventories, financial records and sample prescriptions; and records of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association (1935-1971) and Canadian Pharmaceutical Association (1939-1951): correspondence, membership lists, financial statements, convention proceedings and circulars. Includes photographs of drugstores, pharmacists and 10th Battalion veterans, and a recording of the CJCA broadcast of the Druggists War Stamp campaign (1944).
