J. McKinley Cameron, 1879-1943, was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He received his law degree from Dalhousie University ca. 1900 and was called to the Bar in 1904. In 1911 he married Ethel Munro and they had two sons, Stewart and Jack. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1911 and joined the law firm of Stewart, Tweedie and Charman. With the dissolution of this firm in 1914 he set up his own firm, which developed into a predominantly criminal practice. His cases included the well known Emilio Picariello / Florence Lassandro (or Filumena Losandro) trial of 1922, the Lancelot Chidgey trial of 1926, and the Solloway / Mills trial of 1930. He had many clients from the southern Alberta Chinese community. He invested in petroleum development in Turner Valley, and served as director and lawyer for McDougall-Segur Oil Company. Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of legal client files (1911-1943) pertaining to cases of arson, divorce / marital dispute, gambling, liquor offences, murder, narcotics (opium), prostitution, rape, theft, and various other crimes; diaries of legal appointments (1931-1942); McDougall-Segur records (1913-1936); Aberhart radio broadcasts (1935); financial records; Stewart Cameron cartoons and sketches about Social Credit; and newsclippings related to politics, legal cases and Second World War. Includes photographs of Cameron and scenes of the Steve Lawson murder in Coleman, Alberta (Picariello case).
