Hugh and Pauline Dempsey's First Nations Posters collection
1924-2002, predominant 1960-2002
Hugh Dempsey, former chief archivist of the Glenbow Archives, and his Blood wife, Pauline Dempsey, collected these posters over the years, at various predominantly First Nations sporting, cultural and political events which they and their family attended. The events were held primarily in Western Canada and north-western American states, especially in Alberta and Montana, but include other locations in Canada and the United States, and a few international events in England and France.
Scope and Content:
The collection consists of posters advertising and promoting pow-wows, rodeos, sports (boxing, basketball, wrestling and hockey), various "Indian Days" and "Native
Awareness" events, art and museum exhibits, dance competitions (especially Prairie Chicken), conferences and seminars, Indian Association of Alberta meetings, and Treaty 7-related commemorations.
