The Alberta Landmen's Association was formed in 1948. Its name was changed to Alberta Association of Petroleum Landmen in 1961, at which time it became a provincially registered society. In 1971 the name was changed to Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen, and it was granted a federal charter. Members of the association act as mediators or negotiators between oil and gas companies and the owners of the surface and mineral rights. The purposes of CAPL are to contribute to government policy related to land management, to educate its members through general and specific courses, and to hold social events for members.
