History: Abraham Isaac Shumiatcher, 1890-1974, was born in Gomel City, Russia. The family emigrated to Alberta in 1911 and took out a homestead near Rumsey, but soon moved to Calgary. Shumiatcher studied law at the University of Alberta. He was called to the Bar in 1930 and practiced law in Calgary for over 40 years. In 1940 he was made a Kings Counsel. In 1913, Shumiatcher married Luba Lubinsky, originally from Poland, and they had two children, Minuetta (Kessler), 1914-2002, and Morris, 1916-2004. Shumiatcher played a major role in the establishment of many Calgary Jewish organizations. He served on the executives of the House of Jacob, I.L. Peretz School, Calgary Hebrew School, Canadian Jewish Congress, B'nai B'rith, Histadrut, House of Israel Association and Federation of Young Judea of Canada, among others. Scope and Content: The fonds consists of personal and family correspondence, speeches, lectures, newsclippings, programs, photographs and tax returns; legal client files; and minutes, correspondence and business papers of the many organizations in which he was active.
