Mackie family fonds

69 cm of textual records. -- ca. 850 photographs

James Stuart Mackie, 1860-1949, was born in Westminster, England and moved to Winnipeg in 1882. In 1886 he moved to Calgary, Alberta and established a fur, sporting goods and gun business with Walter Grant MacKay. In 1901 he bought the Thomson Stationery Company's Calgary store which he operated until his retirement in 1906. He then managed a number of real estate properties and built the Mackie and Lancaster buildings in Calgary. He served as an alderman, 1895-1896, 1890-1899, and mayor of Calgary in 1901. He was also very active in the Chamber of Commerce. In 1892 he married Grace M. Forgan, 1867-1971, and they had three sons, Norman Stuart, 1893-1984, James Gordon, 1897-1981, and Allan Kelvin, 1904-1973. For further information see "James S. Allan Kelvin Mackie married Nora Cecile Jones, 1907-1998, daughter of lawyer Clifford Teasdale Jones, 1873-1948, and his wife Elizabeth Jane White (Whyte), 1874-1970. Clifford and Elizabeth had four children: Nora Mackie, Mrs. Fred Cannon, Lillian Jones, and Ralph Jones. Clifford Jones was a brother to Calgary lawyer Stanley Livingston Jones, ?-1916 who was killed in the First World War.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists records of James and Grace Mackie; of the Lancaster Building Limited: of Allan and Nora Mackie: and of various members of the Jones family; and of photographs of Mackie and MacKay families, of Calgary buildings and photograph album of Boorne and May photographs of the Rocky Mountains. Includes correspondence and programs regarding the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall (1901).
