History:
William Frederick Nelson, 1865-1919, was born on October 27 in Glouchester, Massachusetts, USA. On August 12, 1891 he married Sarah Cromwell Bryan in Kingston, Ontario. Soon after they were married, Sarah and William moved to Richmond, Quebec. William and Sarah had two children, Howard Bryan,1899-?, and Christine Mary (Herriot), 1903-1975. In Richmond, William worked for The Grand Trunk Railway and was in charge of freight prior to his departure from the company in 1902 when the Nelson family moved to Rutland, Vermont, USA. William was appointed Station Agent for the Rutland Railroad Co. in 1902 and worked for the company until 1911 when the family moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. William was appointed Manager for the Alberta Loan and Investment Co. in Lethbridge upon arrival in 1911, working as an insurance broker with Sarah's cousin George Bryan who was General Manager of the company. After the company failed, circa 1918, William opened a real estate office, W.F. Nelson & Co. in Lethbridge. In 1919, William F. Nelson died of a sudden heartattack at the age of 54.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of William F. Nelson's personal business files, including correspondence from his departure from The Grand Trunk Railway and The Rutland Railroad Co.; letters regarding his work and personal struggles with The Alberta Loan and Investment Co.; and some correspondence from W.F. Nelson & Co. Includes also business papers regarding clients and other personal files from The Alberta Loan and Investment Co.
