Calgary Albertan fonds

The Calgary Albertan newspaper was established in 1886 as the Calgary Tribune, published and edited by Thomas B. Braden. In 1895 it became the Alberta Tribune published by J. Creagh and Co. (1895), Francis H. Turnock (1895-1896), and William L. Bernard (1896-1899). In 1899 it became the Albertan and was published and edited by Charles B. Halpin (1899-1900), Sam R. Hodson (1900), Wilson and McCaffary (1900-1902), and W.M. Davidson (1902-1926). George M. Bell and Charles E. Campbell purchased the paper in 1926. For further information see Frits Pannekoek's entry, "George Melrose Bell", in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography ( Gordon Bell succeeded as publisher in 1936 with P.C. Galbraith as manager. The latter was succeeded by Harold Bell in 1940. G. Max Bell purchased the Albertan from the estate of his father in 1943 and remained publisher until 1972. He was succeeded by Bruce Rudd (1973-1977), John A. Hamilton (1977-1979), and Donald R. Doram (1979-1980). The title varied as follows: Albertan (1899), Albertan and the Alberta Tribune (1899-1902), Morning Albertan (1902-1924), Weekly Albertan (1902-1920), Western Farmer and Weekly Albertan (1921-1927), Calgary Albertan (1924-1936), Albertan (1936-1980), and Calgary Albertan (1980). In June 1980 the paper was sold to the Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation and renamed the Calgary Sun.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of minutes (ca. 1915-1960s), financial records (1930s-1960s), labour negotiations (1960s-1970s), general administration correspondence (1950s-1960s), and photographs of events and personalities which appeared in the newspaper (1900s-1970s).
