The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), a fraternal society and service organization, was established in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1912, for "benevolent, provident, moral and charitable purposes". It received its national charter in 1913, and that same year Lodge No. 4 was established in Calgary, Alberta.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of constitution, bylaws, meeting minutes, reports, membership and attendance records, correspondence, newsletters, financial records, Calgary Golf and Country Club material (including the legal dispute between Calgary Elks Lodge #4 and the Elks Club of Calgary concerning the golf course), reports of the Purple Cross Fund, histories, anniversary celebration programs, newspaper clippings, provincial and national convention programs, proceedings, resolutions, and reports, photographs and slides, etc., from the following: Calgary Elks Lodge #4, Medicine Hat Lodge #412, Edmonton Elks Lodge #11, Moose Jaw Elks Lodge #7, Lethbridge Elks Lodge #37, Red Deer Elks Lodge #85, Picture Butte Elks Lodge #268, Carbon Elks Lodge #195, Alberta Elks District 4, Alberta Elks Association, Grand Lodge of Canada, and Order of the Royal Purple.
