The Western Heritage Centre Society was established in Alberta in 1985 by the Alberta Stockmen's Memorial Foundation and the Canadian Rodeo Historical Association. The aim was to establish an interpretive centre dedicated to the cattle industry of southern Alberta, and the sport of rodeo. Built at a cost of approximately $15 million, the Western Heritage Centre opened in Cochrane, Alberta on July 1, 1996. The Centre housed displays on the history of ranching and rodeo, as well as the Bert Sheppard Stockmen's Foundation Library and Archives. The Society encountered financial difficulties and dissolved in 2001, and at that time the interpretive centre also closed its doors to the public. Among the presidents of the Society were Shirley Edge, June Lore, Nadine Hymas, 1932-2013, Percy Alexander, Bob Aylesworth, and R. E. (Bob) Wilson. Executive directors included Donna Wallace (1985-1987), Cal Orton (1987-1989), and Bill Pratt (1989). General managers/CEOs included Steve Gundry (1989-1993), Norman Haines (1993-1996), Jim Bates (1996-1998), Donna Livingstone (1998-1999), and Ken Aylesworth (1999-2001); the curator was Max Foran. The honorary chairman was Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman and board chairs included Tom Bews, Nadine Hymas, Marshall Copithorne, Bob Aylesworth and Bob Wilson.
