West Canadian Collieries Ltd. was incorporated on April 2, 1903 in England and was authorized to carry on business in Canada through a special act of the Canadian Parliament, chapter 40 of the Statutes of Canada, 1904. The company acquired properties in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta, some of which had been partially developed by United Coal Fields of British Columbia. West Canadian opened up mines at Lille, Blairmore (Blairmore South and Greenhill), Bellevue, and Adanac. In addition to the operation of the mines the company owned and operated the waterworks system in Bellevue, the electric light distribution systems in Blairmore and Bellevue, and hotels, apartments and houses in both towns. The Lille mine was shut down in 1912 and the Greenhill, Bellevue and Adanac mines in the 1950s and 1960s. The company had other subsidiaries including Blairmore Iron Works, Westcan Timber Company, West Canadian Magnetic Ores and West Canadian Petroleums. The company's assets were acquired by West Canadian Mineral Holdings in 1964 and the latter firm was merged into Resources Service Group in 1972. Subsequently the assets were owned by Scurry-Rainbow Oil and Gas, Consolidation Coal and other companies.
