History: Joel Herbert Stiles, 1884-1957, was born in Ontario and came to Innisfail, Alberta in 1889. In 1904 he became a druggist and apprenticed with Annie Simpson, graduating in 1908. He opened a pharmacy in Bassano, Alberta in 1909. He married Mary Gardner Thompson, 1894-1990, and they had eight children. In 1912 Stiles opened a Rexall agency and became the leading Rexall distributor in Canada (for towns under 1000 population) in 1917-1918 and 1927-1928. Branch stores were opened in Jenner, Duchess and Hussar, two of which were managed by Joel's nephew, Edgar Norman Stiles, 1898-1961. After Joel's death the store was operated by sons William Joel "Bill" Stiles, 1925-1987, and Edwin Garnet "Ted" Stiles, 1914-1989. A new building was constructed in 1974. The Stiles family sold the business in 1989.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of business records of the pharmacy (1909-1989); personal papers of Joel, George, Mary, Edgar, Joseph, N.W., and Mary Ann Stiles (1887-1986); financial records of Miss Simpson's pharmacy (1921-1926); minutes and cashbook of the Bassano Tennis Club (1919-1947); and cashbook and ledger of the Innisfail chapter of the Canadian Order of the Woodmen of the World (1905-1909).
