The Calgary Rotary Club held a luncheon on December 28, 1920, and asked its members to bring friends who had resided in Alberta for 30 years or more. 190 guests attended, and as a direct result of this luncheon, the Southern Alberta Pioneers' and Old Timers' Association was formed. Col. James Walker was the first president. A women's section was formed in 1922 with Lady Lougheed as president. As well as being a social club, the association's aims are to collect and preserve information related to the early settlement of the province, and to keep the memory of early pioneers and their exploits alive. In 1956 the association did a major survey of pioneer families in the Calgary, Red Deer, Strathmore, Brooks, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Fort Macleod, Cardston, Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass areas. 243 forms were completed, giving details about family members and their activities. The association is now called Southern Alberta Pioneers and their Descendants. For further information see James A. Mackie's article "History of the Society" in Pioneer Families of Southern Alberta / Southern Alberta Pioneers and their Descendants. - Calgary : the Society, 1993, p. 218-252.
