The Alberta Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) was founded in Calgary, Alberta in 1980 as the Calgary Chapter. Its founders, including its first president, Marian White, intended to provide technical communication professionals with a more local network within STC Region 7. Due to the broad geography of the province's professional community, the Calgary Chapter expanded to become the Alberta Chapter in 1989, incorporating members from the previously disbanded Edmonton Chapter. Chapter activities included promoting awareness of technical communication and facilitating professional development through seminars, workshops, conventions, and other events, STC-specific and otherwise. Notably, the chapter organised the 1991 and 2003 Region 7 Conferences. It also advocated for and supported post-secondary education in technical communications. The chapter created a scholarship in 1997 for students at Mount Royal College (now Mount Royal University), and helped the college launch a technical communication program in 1998.
