La Leche League was started in 1956 by a group of breast feeding and expectant mothers in Illinois, USA. Local branches now exist throughout the USA, Canada and many other countries. The purpose of LLL is to offer encouragement, information and support to women who wish to breastfeed their babies. Local volunteers are trained as group leaders and maintain a telephone information line, sponsor monthly meetings and special workshops, and distribute LLL publications, audiovisual materials and nursing supplies. The first Alberta branches were organized in the 1960s. La Leche League Alberta / Northwest Territories oversees and coordinates the activities of the districts and local branches within this geographic area.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of correspondence and monthly activity reports of LLL branches, membership lists, workshop and resource materials, and financial records.

Source of Acquisition:
Gift of La Leche League, 1981-2012.
