History: Joseph Stewart Irwin, 1888-1979, was born in Missouri, USA and was educated there. He received his BSc from the Missouri School of Mines in 1912. He taught geology at MSM from 1912 to 1914 and at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania from 1915 to 1916 before joining the Carter Oil Company. After service in First World War he worked for a decade for the Producers and Refiners Corporation. In 1929 he came to Canada as geologist for the Nordon Corporation, followed closely by service with Parco Oil. Irwin opened his own consulting office in 1932 and continued until 1970. He was involved in numerous professional societies as well as the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. He was president of both the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. He married Carrie Irwin and they had four children, Joseph, Mitchell, Aileen (Shier) and Carol.
Custodial History: These records were held by the University of Calgary Library from 1977 until 1985.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of correspondence with clients, reports, articles, newsclippings, and geological logs and drawings (1917-1968); and photographs of Alberta geological views (1937-1950s).
