John Kushner fonds

John Kushner, 1923-1984, was born in Poland. He came to Alberta and subsequently began his career with Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). He soon rose through the ranks of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen to the presidency of the local. He was president of the Calgary Labour Council in the 1960s and was a Calgary alderman for Ward 5 from 1965 to 1967, and again from 1968 to 1974. He was also a Public School Trustee, 1971-1974. From 1975 until 1979 he was a Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the constituency of Calgary Mountainview. This was followed by two terms as Member of Parliament (MP) for Calgary East in 1979 and 1980-1984. Kushner was also very active with many local organizations and served on the board of the Metro Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93, 1969-1974. He and his wife, Olga Komix, 1928-2014, had two sons, Jack and Stan. Stan was elected MLA for Calgary Mountainview after John stepped down in 1978 to enter federal politics. Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of records related to his work as alderman, school trustee, MLA and MP, including correspondence, newsclippings, campaign literature, and photographs.
