In 1905 Daniel P. Hays and his brother, Thomas E. Hays, originally from Missouri, USA established Hays Brothers Real Estate in Carstairs, Alberta. The agency dealt in farm, ranch and town properties, and represented a multitude of insurance and mortgage companies. It served the area encompassing Acme, Airdrie, Carstairs, Cremona, Crossfield, Didsbury, Dog Pound, and Olds. In 1915 Daniel took over his brother's share of the firm and it was renamed the D.P.
