History:
The Independent Order of Foresters was established in the USA in 1874 and spread to Canada in 1876. The purpose of the organization was to act as a health and life insurance society for its members and it developed an active fraternal life. Court Calgary #295 was set up in 1888 and Court Chinook #3028 was established in Calgary in 1946. They merged in 1984. Court Fort Calgary #1660 was chartered in 1976 and Court Bow (Vauxhall) #805 in 1953.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of charters of Chinook, Fort Calgary, Calgary Chinook, Vauxhall and Calgary Courts; minute books, photograph albums, guest books, and newsletters. Includes anniversary and fraternal greetings.

Source of Acquisition:
Gift of Albert G. Swinarton, 1979; and Independent Order of Foresters, 2003-2006.
