The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire was founded in Canada in 1900 by Mrs. Clark Murray. The objects of the IODE are to help in the education of Canadian youth, promote unity in the Empire and foster patriotism and good citizenship. Its motto is "One flag, one throne, one Empire." The organization officially changed its name to IODE in the 1970s. Under the constitution, a municipal chapter is formed in each municipality in which there are three or more primary chapters. The Municipal Chapter of Calgary was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1918. Charter members included Mary V. Spence, Edith Robie and Elizabeth Turner Bone.
