Physical Description:
1.88 m of textual records. -- 1275 photographs. -- 2 audio reels

History:
In the late 1940s James B. Cross of the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company began collecting material for a museum he planned to set up, dedicated to southern Alberta ranchers. On May 18, 1963, the Horseman's Hall of Fame was opened on the brewery grounds. For a decade the display, centred on such men as John Ware, Sam Livingston, the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede's "Big Four" (A.E. Cross, Patrick Burns, George Lane and Archibald J. McLean), Guy Weadick and Wilf Carter, was one of the primary public attractions in the city. HHF was curated by Julien L. West and subsequently by K.N. Zurosky. The sale of the brewery to Carling O'Keefe Breweries resulted in the closing of the museum and the transfer of its collections to the Glenbow-Alberta Institute in 1975.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of J.B. Cross' administrative papers (1950- 1965); reference files about displays and daily activities (1960-1974); records of collections (1962-1974); curator's reports and acquisition correspondence (1973-1974); various historical documents collected by the organization (1624, 1837, 1916-1969); and extensive photographs of North-West Mounted Police, the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company, Calgary Stampede events and champions, and Calgary (1874-1973).
