Herbert Earle, 1884-1975, was born in England. From 1905 to 1910 he apprenticed as an engraver in London, while attending art and design classes at night. He married in 1909, and he and his wife, Adeliza, had six daughters, Ruby (McMullin), Eva (Clapham), Mrs. Curtis, Louise (Sales), Lucy (McGee) and Adela (Anderson). He became a master engraver before serving in Burma during First World War. In 1920 he joined his wife and family, who were already in Canada, and bought the Engraving Company in Calgary. He ran the business until his retirement in 1959. He was very active in the theatrical scene in Calgary and taught classes in theatrical makeup at the Banff School of Fine Arts. He frequently prepared ornamental and illuminated scrolls for presentation to dignitaries.
Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of correspondence, primarily about engraving and theatrical events (1919-1971); personal papers, including military documents (1915-1963); theatre programs and scripts (1918-1964); scrolls, illunimated addresses and artwork (1921-1968); newspaper clippings, primarily about engraving, scrolls and theatre (1919-1960); and photographs of theatre productions and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) near Banff (ca. 1905-1950s). Includes minutes of St. Stephen's Junior Musical Club (1926-1927).
