The Happy Hours Kindergarten group was established in Calgary, Alberta in 1950 by Mrs. D.M. Arbuthnott and Frances Roessingh, 1919-2000, as a private kindergarten for children in their pre-school year. By 1973 Happy Hours had kindergartens in eleven locations. The group was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1970 and became a member of the Calgary Association of Community Kindergartens, when it came under the supervision of the Calgary Public School Board.
