The Glenbow Foundation was formed as a charitable organization in 1954 by Eric Harvie, a Calgary oilman with a strong interest in collecting material relating to western Canada. The Foundation acquired objects, art, books and documents illustrating the material culture of early settlers and native peoples of the area, as well as art and artifacts from around the world. Harvie also built a museum in Banff in 1953 to house the Norman Luxton collection. The Glenbow Foundation was incorporated as The Glenbow-Alberta Institute in 1966, when Harvie gave his collection to the people of Alberta. The Glenbow building, housing a museum, art gallery, library and archives, was built by the Alberta government in 1976. The museum had previously been housed in other buildings including the Hull House and the Old Court House. The Glenbow's objectives are to promote and encourage the acquisition and diffusion of the knowledge of humanity, the arts, and history, and to serve Alberta's educational and cultural needs.
