History:
Ella Hartt, 1865-1943, grew up in Illinois, USA and worked as a private nurse in Cook County, Illinois. She was also very interested in photography as an artistic pursuit. Besides taking photos of family, friends and trips, she took photo studies of children, house interiors, cowboys, ranching, the Gros Ventre and domestic amusements. She made a number of trips west including to her brother Ed's ranch near Cleveland, Montana in the 1890s, to Yellowstone Park, Wyoming in 1898, and to Thelma, Alberta where Ed moved his family in 1906 to ranch. In 1910 she married Ed's partner, Al Suiste, and settled on a ranch in Thelma. She separated from Al in 1916, and resumed her nursing career in Illinois. After her retirement ca. 1930 she moved back to Thelma.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of photograph studies; and photographs of Yellowstone Park trip (1898), Hartt family and friends (1890s-1920), the Montana and Thelma ranches (1900s-1916), and Cleveland, Montana.

Gift of Mrs. Larry Massey, 1966-1970.
