D.E. Black fonds


Physical Description:
75 cm of textual records. -- 144 photographs

David Ernest Black, 1880-1972, was born in Westport, Ontario where he attended school. Afterwards he studied watchmaking and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1903 to set up a repair shop. He later established a large jewelry business that was purchased by Birks in 1920. He was managing director of Henry Birks and Sons Ltd. from 1920 to 1951 and President of Henry Birks and Sons (Western) Ltd. from 1935 to 1961. He was active on Calgary City Council, the Board of Trade, the Calgary Stampede, the Calgary Rotary Club, and many other organizations. He married Mae L. Sinclair, ?-1955, in 1908 and they had three daughters, Dorothy (Wells), Frances (Danby) and Betty (Burns).

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of diaries (1937-1949, 1950-1971); business, organizational and personal correspondence; scrapbooks of newsclippings about local personalities and events; and photographs of stores and family.
