The Fearlessness Centre was founded in Calgary, Alberta in 1989 by Robert Fisher and Catherine Annuto as a therapeutic community dedicated to "freedom from all forms of violence, oppression and hurting". On May 8, 1995 it was incorporated as the In Search of Fearlessness Centre and Research Institute of Alberta. In September of that year it moved into more spacious premises on the 2nd floor of 924 - 6th Avenue SW. The Centre Gallery was originally a project of the Fearlessness Centre, directed by Fisher's wife, Barbara Bickel, a visual artist. By March 1998 the gallery had become more prominent and active than the Fearlessness Centre, and began to administer itself separately. On July 7, 1998 the organization voted to change its name to Centre Gallery Arts and Healing Society of Alberta. On February 9, 1999 it agreed to rename itself Centre Gallery: a Women Focused Art Society. The gallery emphasized work by women artists, but not exclusively. Its program of visual art was complemented by performance art, literary, musical, and dance programs as well as artist talks, lectures, and workshops. Its leading directors and administrators included Barbara Bickel, Pamela Grof, Catherine Cruz, Kathy Lynn Treybig, Elizabeth Laishley and Nina MacDonald. The Centre Gallery found itself unable to raise enough funds to support a full-time executive director, and closed in 2001.
