The Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) was founded in Calgary, Alberta on June 2, 1949, with John O. Galloway as its first president. The society was incorporated later that year. Its objects are to promote the science of geophysics, especially as it applies to mineral and petroleum exploration, and to promote fellowship and cooperation among people interested in geophysical science. In 1952 it became affiliated with the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The CSEG holds technical meetings and conferences at which speakers present papers on topics of interest to the geophysical profession. It also publishes a scholarly journal and a magazine, awards scholarships, and holds social events for members.
