Title:
Canadian Pacific Railway Land Examination fonds

Date(s):
1910-1963

Physical Description:
1.75 m of textual records

History:
During the Canadian Pacific Railway's construction of the national railway in the 1880s, it became involved in the sale and settlement of land. Part of the provisions made by the government to the company were 25 million acres (10 million ha) of land in a belt along the railway, in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The land was examined before sale by Land Inspectors from the CPR's Department of Natural Resources. Information recorded includes description of the average grade of the land; nearest railway station; number of elevators at nearest point; nationality of surrounding settlers; type of farming carried on; nearest creamery, post office, school, and church; average rainfall of district; area of arabla land; type of soil; amount of timber cover; amount of surface water and well depth; amount of grass and hay cover; availability of coal and stone in the region; and improvements made on the land. Most examinations were made or updated in the 1920s to 1940s, but some were done as late as the 1950s and early 1960s.

Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of land examinations files, arranged by ranges west of each meridian, then by townships, and finally by section. Includes some aerial photographs and maps.
