The Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival in Calgary, Alberta grew out of a series of festivals held in Edmonton in 1908 and in cities throughout the province beginning in 1917. Calgary musicians decided to form a local group in 1929 and the first festival was held in 1931. Among those active in the early decades were Noel Pearce, Jesse Walker, Annie Glen Broder, Clifford Higgin, Gladys Egbert and Minuetta Shumiatcher. In 1954 the Kiwanis Clubs in Calgary were approached to provide funds and organizational skills to the festival and it took on its present name in 1968. Until 1975 the festival was operated on a volunteer basis, but that year a paid executive-director was hired. The festival maintains close relationships with local musical organizations, post-secondary institutions, school boards, businesses and service organizations who work together to ensure the success of the festival. A Scholarship Trust Fund was established in 1976 to proivde educational opportunities for competitors. In 2014 the name of the organization was changed to Calgary Peforming Arts Festival.
