History:
The Calgary General Hospital Board of Calgary, Alberta was incorporated in 1890 to administer the new General Hospital. This was a private voluntary board although the hospital was financed by public subscription, municipal contribution, and government funding. The Women's Hospital Aid Society was founded in 1890 to raise funds for the hospital. By 1913 the financial burden of maintaining the institution had increased to the extent that the City was asked to increase its contribution. The resulting agreement included the formation of the Calgary Hospitals Board, a joint board to provide improved hospital services. The Calgary Hospitals Board was incorporated in 1917, and was responsible for the General, Isolation, Smallpox, and Mountview Hospitals. The Board was dissolved in 1918 or 1919, and the hospitals taken over by the City and supported by municipal taxes. The Board was reappointed in 1933 with the City continuing to control policy.
