1956-1970

Physical Description:
5.9 m of textual records. -- 400 photographs

History:
In 1946, the Civic Centre Committee, led by Alexander Calhoun, persuaded the City of Calgary to lease the Coste House for a cultural centre. The Civic Centre Committee organized the Calgary Allied Arts Council which included the Calgary Sketch Club, Alberta Society of Artists, Calgary Women's Musical Club, Calgary Civic Theatre, Workshop 14 and the Calgary Branch of the Canadian Handicraft Guild, as affiliated members. The centre had five functions: it was a civic art gallery; community arts centre for play-reading, chamber music, drawing and workshops; educational institution; and headquarters for both the Community Arts Council and the Western Canadian Art Circuit. Archie Key was the manager from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s. In 1959, a remodelled Calgary Allied Arts Centre was opened in the Union Tractor building. In 1962 a theatre school was established and in 1967 a theatrical group was formed. In 1969 the Arts Centre ceased operations because of financial difficulties. It was purchased by the Riveredge Foundation in 1970 which continued to rent to Theatre Calgary and other cultural groups. In 1974, the building was sold to CHQR radio.
