History: The Business and Professional Women's Club of Calgary was started in 1927 by Nellie McClung, Della Jones and Pansy Pue. The club was originally called the Current Event Club before adopting its present name in 1929. In 1930 six charter clubs across Canada, including the Calgary club, formed the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. That same year an international federation was formed in Geneva and Canada was a charter member. There is also a provincial branch of the organization. The purposes of the club include: to stimulate interest in government business and elections; to promote the equality of women with men; to promote an awareness of the complexity of women's lives both in and out of the home; to promote the interests of women; and to encourage a spirit of cooperation by extending educational opportunities through industrial, scientific and vocational activities. Club members are actively involved in public speaking, community support and various social functions.
